The church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria is a building of worship located in the historic center of Palermo. The imposing aggregate is otherwise known locally as the Church of Santa Caterina delle Donne.
The church is located next to the fourteenth-century monastery of Dominican nuns and was built, by the will of the prioress Sister Maria del Carretto, on a pre-existing building between 1566 and 1596.
Since July 2014 it no longer welcomes Dominican nuns but is assigned to the Palermo curia. The property is owned by the FEC (Fondo Edifici Culto).
The dome was added in the eighteenth century and the choir was added in 1863.
The front, in late Renaissance style, has two levels cadenced by pilasters, with a single portal. In the internal part, with a single nave with three rococo-style churches on each side, we find a very rich marble decoration and eighteenth-century frescoes, which make it one of the richest churches in Palermo.
The terraces were, until 1866, loggias covered and protected by grates: only through these precautions the cloistered nuns could from time to time look out onto the city streets and take a look at what was happening in the world they had left.
Today they offer a magnificent 360 ° view over the city of Palermo.
It was considered one of the primary monasteries of Palermo; religious women who came from noble families exercised the rule of San Domenico. The monastery was built after 1311 by the will of B. Mastrangelo. In 1532, due to the increase in the number of religious women, the church of San Matteo was purchased by the monastery to enlarge the building. In the seventeenth century the monastery had become one of the most important in the city in terms of wealth and extension and by now occupied an entire block. The monastery suffered several damage both during the riots of 1848 and 1860, and during the bombings of 1943.
The last nuns left the monastery in 2014 and today it is open to the public and managed by the curia.
