Messina, his car crashed into the tree and he died instantly. Firefighters were called to extract him from the wreckage, and medical personnel confirmed his death. The highway remained closed for several hours as the police investigated the incident and the prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese determined if there was any responsibility on the part of the Sicilian highway authority in maintaining the trees along the highway. The mayor of Sant’Agata di Militello expressed sorrow and anger at the tragic accident, and a local politician called for an inquiry into potential negligence. This incident follows a similar event on the same highway managed by the same authority in July of the previous year, although that incident did not result in any fatalities.
