Matteo Romano, a 56-year-old man wanted for drug trafficking and evasion, has been arrested on board the Costa Smeralda cruise ship. Romano had been on the run since 2018 and was found hiding in his cabin as the ship was about to dock. He had been sentenced to 18 months in prison for drug trafficking and evasion in 2015, but had escaped to Spain before serving his sentence. Investigators had been searching for Romano for five years, and finally located him through minimal leads. With the help of the cruise ship’s second-in-command, police were able to board the ship and apprehend him. Romano’s family was able to say goodbye before he was taken to Pagliarelli prison to serve his sentence.
