Violence Breaks Out in Pagliarelli Prison: SAPPE Speaks Out

Violence at Pagliarelli Prison

Yesterday morning, there was a shocking outbreak of violence at the Pagliarelli Prison in Palermo. According to Calogero Navarra, the regional secretary for Sicily of the Autonomous Penitentiary Police Union (SAPPE), the incident was caused by the reckless behavior of a prisoner, escalating tensions within the facility.

The violent incident occurred in the Mari Unit, South Wing of the prison. The inmate attempted to assault another prisoner, but when stopped by the officer on duty, he struck the officer with a violent blow to the face, causing them to fall to the ground. The officer was then taken to the hospital by ambulance for necessary treatment.

Moments of High Tension

The SAPPE representative described the situation as “moments of high tension” and expressed solidarity with the injured officer. He emphasized the challenges faced by the Penitentiary Police, who must deal with increasingly violent individuals on a daily basis without adequate support from the authorities.

Worsening Penitentiary Situation

Donato Capece, the general secretary of SAPPE, commented on the worsening penitentiary situation and highlighted the union’s meeting with the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss the issue. He stressed the need for stricter penalties for inmates who assault prison staff, echoing the government’s efforts to pass new security decrees to address these issues.

Capece also acknowledged the cooperation between Italian and Albanian authorities to transfer Albanian inmates from Italian prisons back to their home country, calling for similar agreements with other countries with high numbers of their citizens in Italian prisons.
