Violence in Hospitals: A Growing Concern

Increasing Security Measures

More police checks and patrols, but also vigilante groups that, in massive numbers, can walk through the hospital avenues, especially in the afternoon and at night when the risk of theft, damage, and aggression against doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers is higher. This is a unanimous request, in addition to the urgent meeting at the Prefecture between the directors of the healthcare companies and the law enforcement authorities, which comes to a head amid the escalation of violence affecting emergency rooms and wards: the latest raids, in chronological order, at the Civic Hospital where badge readers for the presence of pavilion 10 were broken and at the Di Cristina Hospital where some surveillance cameras were tampered with. Police posts are not enough to ensure safety: criminals continue to wreak havoc despite all healthcare facilities having a private security service, managed by external companies that have won bids, but are unable to stop the phenomenon now commonplace.
