Pino Puglisi e Biagio Conte: operai amorevoli a Palermo

Padre Pino Puglisi and Biagio Conte were two selfless and tireless workers in Palermo who helped many vulnerable and impoverished people in the city. They first met on September 15, 1993, the day of the mafia assassination of Father Puglisi, as they both sought support from institutions for their work with the poor. An event was held at the Faculty of Theology in Sicily to reflect on their profiles, organized by the “Father Pino Puglisi Diocesan Center, Martyr of the Mafia,” the Diocesan Consultation of Lay Associations, the Office of Social and Labor Pastoral Care, and the Faculty of Theology in Sicily, as part of the diocese’s celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the martyrdom of Blessed Giuseppe Puglisi. The event included speeches by Professor Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, and Don Pino Vitrano of the Mission Hope and Charity. Archbishop Corrado Lorefice offered the concluding remarks. Andrea Riccardi highlighted Father Puglisi’s humility and greatness and emphasized the importance of narrating these stories to challenge the mafia’s attempts to conceal the truth. Don Pino Vitrano spoke about the remarkable mission of Brother Biagio, who dedicated himself to serving the poor and marginalized. Archbishop Lorefice expressed his pride in being the bishop of a city that had witnessed such strong witnesses of charity and justice. He highlighted the commonality between Father Pino and Biagio in their deep encounter with Christ, manifested through their life choices.
