Mattia Finocchio, a 34-year-old man from the province of Chieti, died in a work accident, but his organs will save other lives. His heart will be transplanted to a patient in Palermo, while his liver will go to Rome, his kidneys to L’Aquila, and his corneas to the eye bank in L’Aquila. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon when Finocchio had just finished an electrical intervention. He went back to retrieve some tools when a compressed air pipe exploded, causing a metal bar to hit him in the head with great force. He was rushed to the intensive care unit in Pescara, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. Once brain death was confirmed, the process for organ donation began with the consent of his parents. This tragedy has sparked a gesture of generosity and solidarity.
