Messina: carburanti più cari, motivi in gioco

Franco De Domenico, a former regional deputy and candidate for mayor in Messina, noticed the significantly higher fuel prices in Messina compared to prices in Syracuse. He observed that the price of diesel in Messina averaged around €1.899, which is 5 cents higher than the prices along the Catania to Syracuse route. Additionally, he found that most gas stations in Messina displayed the same price for both diesel and gasoline, €1.899, which is inexplicable considering the higher production cost of gasoline. Only one station had a slightly lower diesel price of €1.889, while others charged even higher prices, surpassing €1.949. De Domenico suggested that this anomaly is a result of a monopoly in fuel distribution in Messina. The station owners do not determine the prices, as they are set by the companies, and the owners themselves earn meager profits of about 3 cents per liter. The government’s initiative to publicize regional average prices had no effect, and the website providing realuation and called for the attention of politicians and institutions, particularly the Prefecture, to monitor price trends.
