Sergio Vaccaro, the director of the Emergency Medicine and Surgery Unit at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Agrigento, has resigned for just cause as of July 24, 2023. In a letter addressed to the heads of the Local Health Authority, the Human Resources and Emergency Department directors, and the management, Vaccaro explains the critical issues in the emergency room and expresses his unwillingness to continue working under these conditions. He cites numerous structural and staffing problems that have worsened the existing issues in the department. Vaccaro’s resignation highlights the lack of personnel as well as the neglect and irresponsibility of the management.
