In Sicily, the right to have an abortion has become almost impossible to exercise. In protest, activists from the Non una di meno movement in
Catania gathered outside the headquarters of the local health authority. They demanded a meeting with hospital directors to discuss the management and functioning of women’s health clinics. The activists claim that none of the ten clinics in Catania offer the RU486 pill, which is used for medical abortions, except for one hospital in Acireale. They argue that any barriers to abortion are a form of violence and that women’s health should be guaranteed. The activists also called for the clinics to provide comprehensive sexual education and contraceptive services to young people. This, they say, is a concrete step to combatting gender-based violence.
